Atheist Ireland’s AGM

As you may know Atheist Ireland will be having it’s first AGM this Saturday (11th July). I’ll be attending, it promises to be an busy but enjoyable meeting, I hope to see a decent turnout from the Mid-west.

The meeting is open to members and non-members so even if you haven’t signed up yet you can still attend. Speaking of signing up you can do so here.

Below is a description of the agenda of the meeting from AI’s Facebook page.

We will be planning the next stage in our campaign against the Irish blasphemy bill, which is likely to be passed in the Dail this Wednesday.

We will also be planning campaigns for a secular Constitution generally, an a secular education system, plus a campaign under the auspices or Atheist ireland encouraging people to read the Bible.

Members of the public are welcome to attend, so please feel free to bring a friend or two who might be interested in finding out more about our work.

Afterwards we will be going to the Market Bar in Fade Street for some food and socialising.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, and to working together for an ethical an secular Ireland free from superstition and supernaturalism.

The meeting takes place at 14.00 in Wynn’s Hotel in Abbey St, Dublin. More info can be found here.

Darwin Day Events in Ireland

This Thursday is Darwin Day and there are numerous events planned world wide.

There are several events in Ireland that you may be interested in.

Wednesday the 11th sees the Irish Skeptics Society hosting a lecture by Professor Tom Hayden, School of Biology and Environmental Science, University College Dublin entitled “Charles Darwin and the Origin of Humans”. The lecture takes place at 8.00pm in the Davenport Hotel, Merrion Square, Dublin 2.

Thursday the 12th will be the HAI’s Annual Darwin Day lecture. The lecture takes place at 7.30pm in the Davis theatre, Arts building,Trinity College, Dublin. This year’s speaker is Professor David McConnell, Professor of Genetics, TCD and the topic is “Darwin, genetics, and the nature of humankind”.

Last but not least our own Mid-west Humanists event will be a trip to the Burren to explore the flora and geology of this unique area. This will replace our normal monthly meeting and takes place on Sunday the 15th at 11.00am. Meet up is in the underground car park across from the Castletroy Park Hotel and we’ll be car pooling.

There are also a number of other Irish events planned this year details of which can be found here.

Hope you’re able to attend one or more of these events and to all an early Happy Darwin Day!

Update – Those of you who, like me, cannot attend any of these events may be interested in this virtual meeting/conference call at 18.00 GMT on the 12th. There is also a Facebook group and of course the man himself twitters.

Upcoming Meeting

Our next meeting will be on Sunday 25th at 11 o’clock in the Castletroy Park Hotel.

The agenda is fairly short but there are a few things people may want to think about before the meeting. The group started six months ago as a meet up of local HAI members organised by Larry but I think it’s fair to say we’ve moved beyond that and I think we need to have a more formal structure. Assuming others agree I’d like people to think about how we might go about electing a committee, writing a constitution, registering as a non-profit company etc.

We are also lucky enough to have Michael Nugent the recently elected Chairperson of Atheist Ireland as a guest speaker. I’m hoping AI can make a bit of a splash and revitalise the Atheskeptihumanist movement in Ireland and am looking forward to hearing what he has to say.

Lastly Darwin Day is February 12th and at the December meeting we talked about organising an outing to the Burren. I’m not sure how much enthusiasm there is for this so people may want to think about alternative suggestions, although time is running out at this stage. Details of the HAI event are here.

Atheists and Free Speech Advocates on YouTube

As some of you may know Creationists and other Christians have been using false DMCA notices to stop free debate on YouTube for some time now. Now a group of the most vocal and popular pro-reason contributers on YouTube have banded together to fight back.

It’s wonderful to see this sort of spontaneous organisation. If you’re a YouTube user please do anything you can to support this effort.

Edit – An excellent background to all of this can be found here.

Atheist Song Contest

Well, from the number of page views it would seem that dj357/FXR’s “I’m an Atheist and I’m OK” is quite popular. In fact this morning I got the below mail –

I just listened to “I’m an Atheist and I’m OK”, and it was wicked funny. And you have great timing on that post.

I’m one of the hosts of Q Transmissions, a weekly skeptical call-in talk show in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

We’ve just posted a contest on the show’s blog, asking people to send us their best rendition of a new atheist anthem. You can read about it on qtransmissions.wordpress.com.

Would you please mention the contest on your blog? We’re hoping to get as many entries as possible, and the only way to do it is to… well… spam the skeptical and atheist community and hope to get the word out. We’re really sorry. Honestly.

And it goes without saying that you are welcomed and encouraged to submit an entry yourself.  🙂

We’re always happy to help out other Atheiskeptihumanists so if you’re feeling creative get recording!

Irish Skeptics Meeting

The Irish Skeptics next meeting is on Tuesday November 18th at 8.00pm in the Gandon Suite of the Davenport Hotel, Merrion Square, Dublin 2.

Their speaker is Julian Baggini who’ll talk about his latest book “The Duck that Won the Lottery“. More details about the event can be found here.

It sounds like it’ll be an interesting discussion, to help get you in the mood you can listen to Julian being interviewed on the Little Atoms Podcast.
